Whatever Happened to the 32A?!?

November 21, 2008 at 3:00PM by Amanda Pickens |

Padded Bra

Where to find A-cup bras!

Lacking in the cleavage department, I often feel forgotten when visiting Victoria's Secret. I guess it just isn't cost effective for the large chain to cater to those of us who fail to fill a B-cup. Perhaps they've begun carrying more A's in the past couple years, but I wouldn't know since I gave up long ago after repeatedly being told, "No, I'm sorry, that doesn't come in a 32A... try the Pink line." While I respect Victoria Secret's decision to create a younger, less sex-obsessed line, I don't appreciate their assumption that all small-breasted girls and women would rather buy cotton bras from the Pink Collection than the lacy lingerie sold throughout the rest of the store. What can I say? I love lace!

After getting ready to give up on the bra hunt for good, I happened to stumble upon an underwear sale at GapBody. Quickly assuming they would be just like VS, I was pleasantly surprised to see A-cups in almost every style...finally, there's a place to buy 32A's in sexy laces and sultry hues. There's actually a place for me to find bras that don't remind me of middle school! Check out their cute bras and undies online if there isn't a store near you!

Love,
Amanda

The Pitbull Wears Fendi

November 3, 2008 at 11:00PM by Lauren Tyler |

Sarah Palin

Last time I checked, Sarah Palin was a proud member of the “Joe Six Pack” and hockey mom set. She’s just a middle of the road Alaskan, trying to make a name for herself, ya know? Despite being the Republican Vice Presidential candidate, she likes to do ordinary things like fish, raise her kids, cheer at her son’s hockey games, oh and wear clothes worth more than some people’s homes. Yep, Sarah’s just an average hockey mom who guzzles her beer with the “Joe Six Packs” in the latest Oscar de la Renta pantsuits. Actually, sexy Sarah’s a little edgier than the pantsuit, she also likes to rock the occasional skirt (Prada?) accompanied by the knee-high leather boot (Manolo perhaps?). With a little help from Neimans and Saks, Sarah has perfected the art of looking fun yet sophisticated, never stuffy or too sexy.

Financial disclosure statements show that the Republican National Committee footed the bill for all of Palin’s wardrobe needs: $75,062.63 at a Minneapolis Neiman Marcus and $49,425.74 at Saks Fifth Avenues in St. Louis and New York. That rounds out to a whopping 150K. If she really is an average Joe, then why doesn’t she have an average wardrobe? Michelle Obama shops at H&M! Sarah says after the campaign, she’s back to wearing her clothes from her fave consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska. Well Sarah, you’re not in Anchorage anymore.

We can play the blame game all day long; however, it’s unfair to completely point the finger at Sarah. I know if I had people willing to shell out the big bucks for my wardrobe, I’d be at Neimans or Bergdorfs faster than you can say election day. It’s not Sarah’s fault per se; however, it is hypocritical to cite herself as an average Joe. If she’s an average Joe, then she should wear average clothes. Instead of Neimans and Saks, give T.J. MAXX, and Saks Fifth Off a little love. Loehmann’s has a back room selling Prada and Dolce!

In times of economic crisis, 150K could have gone to much better use. The RNC plans to donate the clothes, but the issue is not whether or not Sarah’s keeping them. Why not donate the money to a homeless shelter and have Sarah wear more modestly priced clothes? It’s not Sarah’s fault the RNC decided to spend an insane amount of money on her wardrobe. It was a foolish decision and backfired because her wardrobe clashes with her “Joe Six Pack” image.

Peace Out,

Lauren

Check out Sarah’s response to the clothing debacle below! Are you satisfied with her answer?

Fall Fashion

October 22, 2008 at 12:00AM by Lauren Bruins |

fall fashionFashion is one of the main reasons why I love this season so much. Autumn would not be complete without sipping Pumpkin Spice lattes, enjoying the beautiful foliage, and baking warm deserts, but clothes are a whole other level of fall's appeal.

Who doesn't love breaking out warm sweaters, adding endless layers, and finally getting to wear boots again? I just got this really cute long cardigan sweater that goes great with flat boots. I'm a big fan of hoodies because they're so easy to throw on before class, but a sweater can be just as comfortable and looks more put together.

Boots are a great way to dress up an outfit and there's so many styles to choose from. From heels to flats you can find a pair that's perfect for daytime or night. We all know that Uggs have been called cliché and are the stereotype for a college student, but they are so comfortable that I couldn't resist getting a black pair. For a different look, try a dark color or the new knit style that's out this season. My roommate just got a brown pair and they're really cute!

This fall there's some great trends to try out. Right now I'm really craving something plaid and I have my eye on a few shirts at Urban Outfitters. Scarves have also been seen all over the city, whether it's to dress up an outfit or over your jacket to keep warm. I have lots of scarves and love to wear them in different styles.

What's your favorite fall fashion trend?

xoxo,

Lauren

Rachel Bilson for Edie Rose

October 14, 2008 at 12:12PM by Rachel Bilson |

Edie Rose Black Dress

Hi all, I'm so happy I got the chance to visit New York for the Edie Rose for DKNY JEANS launch party. Coming to New York is always so exciting for me. I was here this past spring filming New York, I Love You, which comes out in February 2009. The pace here is so much faster than LA's, but I love it! I come here at least six times a year and without fail, the city's always alive and bustling.

When I travel, I try to bring clothes that I can wear a lot of different ways. I got so much use out of the black denim dress from the collection and even wore it in the movie. Every girl needs a black dress, right? It's an essential! Theres just so much you can do with a black dress. Red, yellow, purple — every color looks good with this basic. Your outfit can be casual with flats and a cardigan or you can glam it up with a belt and tights. The possibilities are endless.

Talking about trends can work up an appetite so while I was in New York, I stopped by my favorite New York eatery, Café Habana. It's really small and gets cramped quickly, but the food easily makes up for the chaos. It's a Cuban-Mexican café that literally has the best corn ever! There are tons of dishes with corn salad. I totally recommend going there if you're in the area.

It was a pleasure blogging for CosmoGirl! It was another great trip to New York and I definitely hope to return to very soon!

XoXo,
Rachel

Rachel Bilson for Edie Rose

October 9, 2008 at 6:00PM by Rachel Bilson |

Hey everyone,

I just came back from the Edie Rose for DKNY JEANS launch party, and it was amazing! Macy's (www.macys.com) Herald Square was packed with such a great energy. With the awesome beats coming from the DJ and the models rocking Edie Rose for DKNY Jeans pieces, I'd say it was a huge success!

I met so many fabulous girls who had such innovative styles. Also, I finally got to meet Jacqueline Azria-Palombo, CosmoGirl's Creative Director (AKA the mastermind behind the magazine's cool look). We talked about my new collection and fall trends.

It's hard to say what my favorite piece in the collection is, but I think it may be the white roll sleeve shirt with black ties. It's a fun piece because you can make a little knot or bow tie, whatever you want. I love how versatile it is - you can pair it with a leather biker jacket for more of an edgy look or dress it up with a nice pair of slacks and heels.

Designing a fashion collection is something I've wanted to do for a long time and I couldn't imagine a better partner than DKNY JEANS to make my dream come true.

Thanks to everyone that came to the launch party today, I hope you all enjoyed it!

More to come soon!
XoXo,
Rachel

Paris Fashion Week: Sophia Kokosalaki

October 2, 2008 at 4:02PM by Jessica Marati |

Paris Fashion Week: Sophia Kokosalaki

I love glamorous dresses. I love thumbing through them on racks and feeling their rich textures. I love trying them on in stores and twirling in them before dressing room mirrors. I love how the right dress can take you out of your mundane life and transform you into Sophia Loren or Elizabeth Taylor or any of the other sirens of classic cinema.

So imagine my utter glee at the Sophia Kokosalaki show on Tuesday when I saw gorgeous dress after gorgeous dress parade down the runway. The colors! The fabrics! The textures! A sexy black chiffon, followed by a flowing white jersey. Neon orange followed by cool aqua. A tight little cocktail number followed by a floor-grazing ball gown adorned with feathers. It was enough to make anyone (okay, or maybe just me) give little shrieks of glee at the sheer beauty of it all.

While there were a handful of structured pant and skirt ensembles, I left the show with visions of Kokosalaki's undoubtedly feminine dresses dancing in my head. I may have to head to a boutique soon to do a little dressing room twirling!

Paris Fashion Week: Tsumori Chisato and Issey Miyake at the Carrousel du Louvre

October 2, 2008 at 10:08AM by Jessica Marati |

Paris Fashion Week: Tsumori Chisato and Issey Miyake

The Carrousel du Louvre is the epicenter of Paris Fashion Week, and it's always a bit of a circus. A constant stream of fashion editors, buyers, sponsors and special guests pass from one show to the next, and the lobby is packed with photographers jostling to get shots of the random models and celebrities that pass through. Pass the security gates and you'll find several large rooms where the shows take place, a high-tech press room and a chic upper lounge where connections are made, business deals are brokered and women in precarious footwear rest their aching feet.

I spent Tuesday morning at the Carrousel checking out shows from two Japanese designers, Tsumori Chisato and Issey Miyake. While both shows incorporated the Oriental roots of their respective designers, they otherwise couldn't have been more different.

The Tsumori Chisato show was quirky, colorful and a tad bit fantastical. The designer, who once worked with Miyake, showcased a vibrant collection that seemed to take inspiration from all corners of the world. Each ensemble featured a kaleidoscope of colors, patterns and textures – stripes, florals, polka dots, madras and even feathers – which taken all together was slightly overwhelming. Somehow, though, the models pulled off the looks as they jaunted down the runway in funky bright eye makeup and outlandish hairdos.

The Issey Miyake show was a lot more zen. Miyake, who has developed a reputation for incorporating the latest technological trends into his designs, decided to go back to nature for this collection. He took his inspiration from the jungles of the Amazon, working with a color scheme of muted greens and browns, with an occasional shock of fluorescent. The models seemed effervescent, floating down a spare white space that featured a curtain of reed-like cords that extended down the runway mid-show. The music was new age.

The shows left me with two very different feelings; the Chisato show invigorated and inspired me, while the Miyake show brought me back to earth. Then I returned to the Carrousel and it was all just a circus again!

Paris Fashion Week: Cher Michel Klein Spring/Summer 2009 Collection

September 30, 2008 at 6:02PM by Jessica Marati |

Paris Fashion Week: Cher Michel Klein Spring/Summer 2009 Collection

Sunday morning, in the aforementioned cheap outfit, I headed to the Opera Ballroom of Le Grand Hôtel Intercontinental for the Cher Michel Klein show. After checking in with the event greeters and getting my seat number, I started to head inside but had to stop to catch my breath. The runway was, as the French say, magnifique! The event organizers had set up pink and blue lighting to highlight the elaborate interior of the ballroom, and the effect was simply incredible.

The show itself was as glitzy as the venue. Designer Michel Klein seemed to incorporate a little bit of everything into the collection: sleek silhouettes, flirty skirts, sophisticated trenches, athletic-inspired hoodies, funky florals, ethnic knits, Grecian ropes… there even seemed to be some Bedazzle action! The models sported sexy tousled hair and crazy fluorescent eye makeup, and they strutted down the runway to a mix of electronic fashiony-sounding songs and energetic pop hits, including my favorite song of the summer, "American Boy" by Kanye West.

The clothes were gorgeous – I wish I could snag a ton of the pieces for my own closet! – but in the end, the whole show seemed a little safe. In fashion, you're supposed to take risks, right? Break boundaries? Start trends? This show was certainly dazzling – even BEDAZZLING at times, hehe – but it didn't really contain that extra something I've come to expect from the collection of a major fashion designer. If anything, I was more inspired by the ballroom – Marie Antoinette-style pumps next spring, anyone?

Shopping on a Budget

September 30, 2008 at 10:40AM by Lauren Bruins |

With all the major news headlines about the economy crisis lately, money is on everyone's mind.  As a college student, the gas prices and other rising everyday expenses have not been helping my wallet.  I'm not ready to give up on fashion and so I've been getting creative with how I can shop on a budget!  Here are some ways that you can watch what you spend and have a fashionable fall wardrobe.Shopper

  • Check out thrift stores! I know it sounds kind of strange...wearing other people's used clothes. But you'll be surprised what you can find. I've gotten designer clothes, and some of them still had the tags on, for a fraction of the price. You can also have a lot of fun finding vintage pieces at thrift stores.
  • Shop the sales racks. So the discount rack at Urban Outfitters is mostly last season's clothes, but so what? Fall is all about layering and those cute blouses and tanks would go perfect with a cardigan for fall.
  • Swap wardrobes! You and your friends all get bored with the clothes that you have. So why not swap old clothes? Get together and bring all those sweaters and shirts that you're sick of. Clothing can look completely different on another person. Plus, it's a great way to get use out of that stuff sitting in the back of your closet!
  • Mix it up. Add a bag from H&M or a dress from Target to your wardrobe. You can find really cute stuff at these types of stores and save a lot of money.

Do you watch what you spend when you're shopping?  Tell me what you do to shop on a budget and still look great!

xoxo,

Lauren

Paris Fashion Week: Dévastée Spring/Summer 2009 Collection

September 29, 2008 at 3:00PM by Jessica Marati |

Paris Fashion Week Dévastée

The invitation to Dévastée's fall show came decorated with creepy little illustrations of ghosts, goblins and tombstones, and a poem on the front cover of the program included the line: "il arrive que les belles quittent la Maison des morts pour marcher sur le sable, à petits pas réglés." Loosely translated: It happens that the beautiful leave the House of the dead to walk on the sand, a little unresolved. Yikes! Isn't a little early for Halloween?

Needless to say, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the Dévastée show Saturday evening at Le Showcase, a popular nightclub under the Pont Alexandre III in Paris. But when the collection was finally unveiled, I understood the morbid references. I think the theme of the show can best be described as Night of the Living Dead meets the Gossip Girl season premiere in the Hamptons. Sound strange? It was. But somehow it worked.

Designers François Alary and Ophélie Kière are known for having a whimsical, if slightly macabre, approach to fashion, which was revealed through the quirky ensembles showcased on Saturday. The collection had a strict black, white and khaki color scheme, and featured lots of nautical stripes, logo prints and funky eyewear. The models were a mix of all-American types and funky Asians, all with pin-straight, center-parted ponytails. Some of the looks were a bit out of this world - one girl came out in her undies - but otherwise, the collection was very wearable.

So how can you crib the Dévastée look next spring and summer? Keep on doing your shopping at the Gap - but just load up on eyeliner for your next trip to the beach.

Jess

Rachel Bilson for Edie Rose

September 29, 2008 at 2:22PM by Unknown Unknown |

Hey CosmoGirl readers!

I thought I’d let you in on a little secret. I’m in love...with clothes! From classic vintage pieces to awesome denim dresses, I’m all about expressing yourself through creative fashion. That’s why I’m really excited that my clothing line, Edie Rose for DKNY JEANS has finally hit stores. Co-designing with DKNY JEANS was such a great opportunity for me. The designers are incredibly talented and they really made my vision come to life.
Edie Rose look
I’m looking forward to heading to New York soon for the Edie Rose for DKNY JEANS launch party this Saturday at Macy's in New York. I’ll be there with CosmoGirl's Creative Director, Jacqueline Azria-Palombo, to talk about the inspiration behind the collection and this fall's must-have trends. Come join me from 2-4pm at Macy's Herald Square and bring a friend.

The collection's name "Edie Rose" is very important to me. Edith was my grandmother's name, who unfortunately passed away a couple of years ago. Her friends always called her "Edie." We were really close and I wanted the name of my line to have significance, so I feel like this helps her name live on. Rose is another person very close to me. She’s a strong, intelligent woman who has been a great influence on me. The name to me represents two amazingly influential women.

The Edie Rose line is all about the experimentation and the freedom of mixing and matching. The pieces in the collection are for a variety of occasions, so I think it’s something many girls will be able to incorporate into their personal styles. There are plenty of basics, along with male-influenced items like the Tuxedo Jacket with White Piping. The line is full of black, white and bright yellow pieces. I'm really into yellow right now. I have this vibrant yellow scarf that inspired me to add yellow throughout the collection.

Check in next week for photos from my launch event in New York!
XoXo,
Rachel

Dressing for Paris Fashion Week

September 29, 2008 at 12:00PM by Jessica Marati |

Travel Blogger Fashion Week Outfit

After much anticipation, Fashion Week has finally hit Paris! There are back-to-back fashion events from now until October 5, and the streets are flooded with even more gorgeous fashionistas than usual.

As a freelance writer, I managed to snag a bunch of invites and spent the weekend attending some really cool shows. Now, while you won't find me rubbing shoulders with front-row celebs at the Chanel show, you WILL find me scoping out some of the hottest up-and-coming designers and art-fashion fusion projects and reporting it all back to you.

But first, the question I'm sure is on all of your minds: what on earth do you WEAR to Paris Fashion Week?

Unfortunately, I'm pretty low on funds, and, unlike Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada , I don't have unlimited access to CosmoGirl's fashion closet. But I did manage to throw together a cute outfit for this morning's Cher Michel Klein show for under $100!

Black sheath dress, $25, Forever 21

Black opaque tights, €9 (about $13), H&M

Vintage belt, €5 (about $7), Free 'P' Star (my favorite vintage store in Paris!)

Vintage scarf, €1 (about $1.50), Free P Star

Black pumps, €29 (about $42), Texto (a French shoe store chain)

Flashy cocktail ring, $6, H&M

TOTAL: $94.50

The lessons? Go cheap on the basics. Go vintage on the accessories. And when in doubt, go with the oldest fashion trick in the book – wear black!

So tell me: what are your secrets to looking cute on a budget? Maybe I can steal some for this week!

Bisous,

Jess
