Get Ready to Celebrate!

July 3, 2009 at 9:00AM by Arielle Hixson |

Fireworks

It's that time of the year again! I feel as if the summer season officially starts on the Fourth of July. This is possibly one of my favorite holidays. With warm weather, great barbecue and stellar fireworks how can you go wrong? This year the celebration will be on a Saturday (woo hoo!) which is perfect because it makes the weekend much more special. In a way, it's like Christmas in July...without all the elves. The most exciting thing here in NYC is that the Statue of Liberty will be re-opened to the public! Visitors will be able to climb to the top and look out onto the picturesque crown like the good 'ol days. This definitely marks an era of change since the shocking period of 9/11. Hopefully everyone will be inspired this year to have a lot more patriotism and really celebrate this weekend!

What are you doing this July 4th? Do you feel even patriotic this year?

My Boyfriend's Shirt

July 1, 2009 at 4:04PM by Arielle Hixson |

Mary Kate Olsen Boyfriend Shirt

Fashion is constantly changing as we all know. And, designers have created some revolutionary styles, but I'm starting to believe that celebrities boyfriends are starting to have the upper hand! Once in a while I might see a celeb in what I think is a bizarre ensemble...yet the next day I find myself looking for that exact outfit. Lately, several Hollywood starlets have been seen sporting their boyfriend's laundry. Celebs such as Lindsay Lohan, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Rihanna can be seen in these oversized, yet stylish button-ups.

To get this look, you simply throw on a button-down shirt (that's larger than your typical size) over some tight bottoms and call it a day! To perfectly bottle the "boyfriend" aspect of this look, get the cutest shirts at Company 81. In case you haven't noticed this company creates only guys’ shirts...but so what? They are perfect! This designer has button-downs at pretty amazing prices (from $20-$60 dollars!). That just sounds too good to be true...I'm picking up a few right now!

What do you think of boyfriend shirts?

Arielle

Emma Watson

Emma Watson is the new face of Burberry and is more gorgeous than ever! The pics are truly amazing. With the latest Harry Potter movie release, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, we've been seeing her everywhere. We've heard rumors that Emma will be attending Columbia University (NYC!) in the fall but it has yet to be confirmed on her official website. No matter where she goes, we're sure she’ll be breaking hearts.

Have you seen Emma Watson's Burberry ads? Who is your favorite Harry Potter character?

NYC Prep

June 26, 2009 at 1:34PM by Kristen Walker |

Blake Lively and Leighton Meester

On Tuesday, Bravo premiered its new show NYC Prep about a group of elite, super wealthy New York City teens. It’s like a real life version of Gossip Girl with only one cast member attending public school, and the rest attending various private schools. While the fashion on NYC Prep is in keeping with Gossip Girl, the drama is not as intense and the cast members are not nearly as perfect for the part as Blair, Serena, Dan and the rest of the cast (but hey, real life is seldom as dramatic or as beautiful as TV).

The sneak peek episode as well as the first episodes moved along slowly but getting to know the characters is always the goal at the beginning of a new show. I'm interested to see how the drama evolves (I'm a new NYC Prep addict!) and where the show ends up. Check it out on Bravo on Tuesday at 9/8c.

Did you happen to see the NYC Prep premiere? What did you think?

The World Loses an Angel

June 26, 2009 at 1:26PM by Kristen Walker |

Farrah Fawcett

June 25 was a sad day for the entertainment world (and the rest of the world!) as we lost two legends, Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. Fawcett died in the intensive care unit of a hospital in California after a long battle with cancer. She was 62 years old.

Farrah Fawcett starred in numerous movies and TV shows, including The Six Million Dollar Man, I Dream of Jeanie, and of course, Charlie's Angels. Her iconic red bathing suit poster is the best-selling pin-up poster of all time selling more than twelve million copies. She was a gorgeous pop culture icon and will be truly missed.

Tell us your reactions and favorite Farrah and Michael moments.

Summer Vacation Tips: How to Go Digital-Free

June 26, 2009 at 10:58AM by Tammy Tibbetts |

Slept Away

Are you traveling abroad this summer or taking a job away from home that will cut you off from your usual 24/7 cell and Internet access? Whether you're excited or daunted by the digital detox, don't sign off without reading these tips!

Author Julie Kraut knows the drill, because she just wrote an awesome beach read called Slept Away, about a girl, Laney Parker, who leaves her city life for a remote campground. She gave us five reminders:

First: Set an automatic response message for e-mails

If you're not checking your e-mail for a while, put up a vacation responder. This way, people won't think you're ignoring them when you don't write back right away. Go to your e-mail account settings and look for the automated reply option. Write a short message that explains you're unable to check e-mail and mentions when you'll return.

Second: Update your status

Friends might Facebook or MySpace you to make plans, so also update your status to remind them that you're away and when you'll return.

Third: Change your Facebook approval preferences

What happens if Aunt Sue discovers how to use Facebook while you're gone and decides to post and tag your embarrassing childhood photos? You can adjust your Facebook privacy settings so that no one can tag you in photos or post to your wall without your approval. This way, if it's something that would make you cringe, you don't have to worry about not being able to delete it fast enough.

Fourth: Change your voice mail message

If someone tries to call your cell and can't reach you, change the voice mail prompt and remind them that you have limited access to good reception. Thank them for their message and say you'll respond as soon as possible — but it might take longer than usual.

Fifth: Take time to smell the roses!

Don't flip out wondering how many text messages you've missed, whether your crush left you a cute Wall post, or how many Twitter followers you're up to. The digital world will keep all your messages safe until you return! Focus instead on enjoying the unplugged life and take as many pictures as you can — they'll make a killer Facebook album to post when you're back online.

Think you could handle a digital detox? At CosmoGirl.com, we're not so sure we could...but we'll at least take a weekend getaway to read Slept Away! :-)

Bon voyage,
Tammy

Death of Michael Jackson

June 26, 2009 at 10:05AM by Arielle Hixson |

Michael Jackson

The shocking news of Michael Jackson's death has startled us all. This remarkable pop idol has supremely influential not just with other musicians, but with his fan base, too. He effortlessly created trademark dance moves. His timeless voice could transform an average song and make it sound revolutionary. Michael Jackson could simply own the stage with his style and grace. I believe that this is one of the most upsetting points in performance history as the inspiration for some of the most famous performers today is no longer with us. It's upsetting that Michael had such a bizarre and often tragic personal life, but he always continued to honor the stage with his mesmerizing presence. Several stars such as Cher, Elizabeth Taylor, Britney Spears and Madonna have been mourning this tragic loss to the pop world. Although the legendary Michael Jackson is gone, in some ways he is immortal. Whenever his music is played, many will remember him as one of the most influential artists of all time.

What do you think of Michael Jackson's sudden death?

Revive Your Wardrobe

June 25, 2009 at 11:24AM by Kristen Walker |

Brass Ring

Ever feel like your clothes are all old and boring and you just need a change? Sometimes I just want to go shopping and buy a whole new wardrobe. Well don’t stress. Rather than spending a fortune when your clothes are perfectly fine, think about trying out some fun, new accessories. It's amazing what a funky necklace or a stack of bangles can do to a simple racer back tank. And you don't have to hand over your entire paycheck to get cute, trendy pieces. Try local boutiques or stores in your mall like Charlotte Russe, H&M and Claire's. My favorite is Forever 21. Their jewelry starts as low as $2.80. I'm serious! You can't get any cheaper than that – and it's totally adorable. It's amazing what adding a few new pieces to your jewelry box will do for you.

Tell me your favorites! Where do you love to shop for jewelry and accessories?

Kristen

Who is Your Bad Boy Crush?

June 23, 2009 at 1:49PM by Ariana Finlayson |

Chuck Bass - Ed Westwick

I remember my first bad boy crush - it was Ryan Phillipe’s character, Sebastian Valmont in Cruel Intentions. He was so hot - his smoldering eyes, his money (a girl can be shallow!), and his mystery. Plus, his pursuit of Reese Witherspoon’s character, Annette Hargrove, was charming although it began with ulterior motives.

My newest bad boy crush is Chuck Bass. I almost have no words on why Chuck Bass makes me crazy. I’m kind of new to the Chuck Bass fan club, and before I got into Gossip Girl, I thought he was SUCH a creep - the way he stalked around corners and raised only his eyes when he was scheming. But after having watched him for a full season, I’m totally infatuated. He’s over-the-top dramatic which makes him kind of funny and endearing, and at the same time totally hot. I like the way his mouth moves when he talks and how he can communicate with just his eyes (ladies, you know what I’m talking about!).

And, I probably have a crush on him because I don’t normally go for guys like Sebastian and Chuck. Going for the dangerous guy must be part of some fantasy, but if I knew a real-life Chuck Bass, I’d hate him! My boyfriend now couldn’t be further from the two characters - and what a relief! He teases me and is like, “Didn’t Chuck harass Little J in episode one, season one? WHY do you like THAT guy?”

Um, hello!?

He’s Chuck Bass.

Please tell me I’m not alone! Girls, let me know who your favorite bad boy character is and why - guilt free!

xo,

Ariana

My Sister's Keeper

June 23, 2009 at 11:02AM by Kristen Walker |

My Sister's Keeper Red Carpet

All you Cameron Diaz lovers out there get excited because on Friday, My Sister's Keeper a brand-new movie based on the novel by Jodi Picoult hits theaters. I'm sure everyone has seen the previews. Anna, played by the amazing Abigail Breslin, was created by her parents to help her older sister, Kate, survive leukemia. The last straw comes when Anna is supposed to give Kate one of her kidneys and refuses. So she decides to sue her parents for the rights to her own body.

I read the book a couple of years ago and it was amazing. It was very emotional and I couldn't put it down. All of Picoult's books are similar – an intense plot that makes you feel like you have to keep reading. My mom even read the book and loved it. And now I'm so excited to see the movie!

Have you read the book? Are you going to see the movie?

Team Jacob? It's Possible...

June 22, 2009 at 11:52AM by Arielle Hixson |

Taylor Lautner

Did anyone else notice how there is a second cutie in the New Moon trailer? Yes, Taylor Lautner, the actor who plays Jacob, is indeed an attractive sight. After watching the sneak peak of New Moon, seventeen-year-old Taylor is definitely making another kind of transformation - from cute to dreamy. I mean, we always knew that he would...but seeing him run around with his shirt off definitely sealed the deal! According to imdb.com, Taylor gained 26 pounds to fit the new role of Jacob in the second film! Evidently, the weight gain worked out well because this year the heartthrob actor made the list of People Magazine's 2009 Most Beautiful People under 21! So I guess we have a lot to look forward to with the next Twilight film. Edward may just have a little competition on his hands...

What do you think of Taylor Lautner? Are you team Edward or team Jacob?

xoxo,
Arielle
