Boost Mobile Pro Surf Competition Day 2: Kelly Slater

So as I told you ladies yesterday, last night I got to go to the annual Surfer Poll and Video Awards in Orange County — it’s pretty much the Oscars of surfing, but with a lot more natural tans and words like “dude” and “bro.” Seriously, the host started off the night by welcoming us all to the “brodeo that is the Surfer Poll.”

So all the best surfers in the world come together to be honored with awards like “Best Tube Ride,” “Worst Wipeout” and of course the finale “Surfer of the Year.” Hottie Kelly Slater took home the final award of the night for the 11th time, yes he is still hot after all these years.

I had an amazing time listening to all the hilarious acceptance speeches and goggling at all the surfer boys with clothes on, but I would have to say that today at the Boost Mobile Pro event, got me even more excited. You see, I got to interview Kelly Slater himself when he came out of the water after scoring a perfect 10 and advancing to tomorrow’s semi-finals. Did I mention that he had just come out of the water?

But more importantly, I have to say I’d never thought I’d be in the same room (well beach), let alone talk to someone who is the best in the world at anything. And let me tell you, this guy was just as amazing to watch in the water as he was getting out of it. I think this city girl is sold on surfing, it’s awesome (see, I’m already using the lingo bro).

So back to Kelly, even though he was probably exhausted after ripping it up in the ocean, he was sweet enough to give me a moment of his time, and even a little advice for the ladies. Kelly has been World Champion a whopping 8 times and is going for his 9th (take that Michael Phelps), but when he started he had no idea he would be in it this long, let alone kicking butt the whole time. Our location, Trestles Beach, has been good to him — it is where he won his first pro competition so many years ago and today the waves were just right.

“They were so perfect all you had to do was stand up,” he told us. I think it would be a little harder for us mortals, but I’ll give it to him, he did get the day’s only perfect 10.

So anyway, I asked him what he was planning on doing if he wins (again) and he sweetly said with his dreamy blue eyes sparkling, “I’m going to have a dance party with my girlfriend and her family.”

What a sweetheart, and what a lucky girl. So, I took this opportunity to ask him for a little dating advice — I mean he has been linked to Cameron Diaz, Pam Anderson, and Giselle Bundchen — and I couldn’t agree more with what he offered up. “Don’t get caught up in the drama. If someone doesn’t better your life, then they aren’t worth it.” Right on Kelly, and good luck tomorrow.

Well the sun is setting over the water and I’m off to enjoy some Southern California sushi. I’ll be back blogging from the beach again tomorrow and we will find out if Kelly will take home the gold.
