Curls for Girls

What are the motivations for working out? In a recent conversation with a co-worker, we started discussing why guys and girls work out. He was convinced that it is purely superficial and for appearance’s sake on both sides of the sexes. That being said, he was just doing push-ups in the back room.

Being someone who runs about three times a week and does a short arm and ab workout, I argued back with him, saying that working out isn't just for appearance sake. I told him it was my stress reliever and generally makes me feel good about myself on the whole.

"You're wrong," he contended as he went to finish up a second set of push-ups. This poses an interesting question: Are guys really just working out for us girls?

Does it really matter if they have huge biceps and powerful pecs? Many at the gym claim that they work out to be stronger, so that when the time comes to lift a couch or throw a punch, they are ready.

However, how often is one lifting a couch or getting in fights? Maybe they are just doing curls for girls. After all, what do you find more appealing? A guy with a good build or a skinnier, leaner guy?

Just as there is pressure for girls to be thin and lean, there is pressure for guys to be muscular and built. So are we all working out for the right reasons...to be healthier and live longer? Or is it really for a flat stomach and a tight butt?

What do you think? Why do you work out?

xoxo,
Divya

P.S. He's beginning his third set of push-ups now.
