Avoiding Morning Meltdown

While I feel so lucky to get to come into the CosmoGirl offices every morning, I have to confess that I’ll probably always have trouble making that first initial move out of my bed. For those days when I’ve hit the old snooze button one too many times – making a full shampoo-and-blowout so not an option – I have a few hair tricks up my sleeve. Here are some of my favorite ways to save slumber without sacrificing style. (Hey, it’s called beauty sleep for a reason!)

1. Pump up the volume. Forget traditional shampoos – my new obsession this summer is dry shampoo, an ingenious little product that comes in both spray and powder form. (And at all price ranges, too – check your local drugstore for options!) To revitalize yesterday’s lackluster locks, apply dry shampoo liberally to roots and brush through. Touch up ends with a straightener or curling iron, or just leave au naturel for all-day oomph.

2. Wake up to gorgeous waves. If you like to wash your hair in the evenings, you can style your hair overnight by pulling it back into a French braid (for loose, beach-y texture) or a series of skinnier braids (for crimped locks). In the morning, just break up the braids, mist with a light-hold hair spray, and go.

3. Banish bangs. One of the most time-consuming aspects of my morning routine is struggling with my sideswept, uncooperative, and oddly cowlick-y fringe. When you’re running short on time, sweep stray hair off your face with a tiny braid, a la Minka Kelly. Grab a section of hair about a ½-inch thick and braid close to your hairline, then secure behind your ear with a few bobby pins. Boho babe (and known braid lover) Sienna Miller would be proud.
