cat fight!

My boyfriend and have a small apartment we share with Alice, a sweet but very neurotic Siamese shoeshoe. She's been with us for a long time, but she's still very skittish (having been abandoned originally). This weekend, John brought home the most adorable black cat named Lulu. She's very affectionate and playful. The problem is the two cats are not getting along. Alice had a panic-induced asthma attack and hid under the bed most of the time. Meanwhile, Lulu has wet the sofa! It's only been a few days, but I'm afraid that if this situation continues, we may have to take Lulu back to the pound or give Alice away.

Have you ever had to choose between two pets? What would you do? I'd appreciate any advice!
