your right to free speech!

Computer Mouse

Hey girls,

Do you think it’s fair for your school to punish you because of something you wrote in a blog from your home computer?

Avery, a 17-year-old student at Lewis S. Mills High School, is suing her school because they did just that.

Avery wrote a blog entry on livejournal.com about how frustrated she was with school officials because they were going to cancel Jamfest, an annual battle of the bands concert at her school that she helped put together.

Avery called school officials a vulgar name in her blog, and when the school found out, they wouldn’t let her run for re-election as class secretary, even though she won with write-in votes.

Avery has apologized for the words she used, and the school rescheduled Jamfest, but Avery is still not allowed to hold her student council position.

Do you think a school should have the right to punish a student for something they write in a blog from a home computer? Is this a violation of free speech? Let me know what you think!

And check this out for more info.

XOXO,
Jessica
