the pursuit of happiness

January 29, 2007 at 8:00PM by Jessica Levey |

Wow, my first ever blog entry. wait that's so not true, I just remembered that I wrote a travel blog when I went to Guatemala two years ago. OK, well, it is my first ever blog entry for CosmoGirl, and for that I am proud. It feels so good to write for a change since I spend most of my time looking at pictures. Can I just start off by saying that working at Cosmogirl is the best job ever and I am so Damn lucky to be surrounded my smart beautiful and supportive women every day (oh, and the three token guys).

The main reason that I am pointing this out is because I recently read this "Daily Om" which mentioned how important it is to appreciate everything that we have that is good in our lives. This "Daily Om" was e-mailed to me very soon after breaking up with my last boyfriend (dated for 5 months, broke up three weeks ago). I was in a very pitiful state, feeling sorry for myself and focusing on only negative thoughts.

Within this e-mail, it described the act of imagining an empty glass and filling that glass with everything that you have in your life. Soon, the glass is pouring over, and there is no more room for negativity. Every once in a while when I feel myself slipping back into thoughts of loneliness or self doubt I do this exercise and it really works! I fill the glass with images of my job, and all of my friends, and my wonderful family, and my art work, and my kick ass apartment, and my records (yes, I actually still own vinyl), and the Brooklyn street where I live, and so forth. I instantly get a smile on my face, and for that moment I forget about the things that are sucking positivity out of my psyche (i.e. ex boyfriends, some politicians, bitter cold weather, my alarm clock, etc). I am telling you, it really works. Its sort of a nice meditation, but instead of non-thought its more about happy thought.

Would like to hear what you gals have to say. How do you stay positive when everyone and everything around you Seems to be turning your smiles into frowns?

xoxo
