veronica mars goes to college!

I've loved "Veronica Mars" since the very first episode, and I was thrilled beyond belief that the new CW added the show to its lineup following "Gilmore Girls". Last night's third season opener is a great chance for new viewers to catch up, as Veronica begins life as a college freshman at the fictitious Hearst College.

The show gets a lot of comparison to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", but it's a little unfair. There's no crazy, supernatural mythology to follow. What VM and Buffy do share is a smart, funny, strong female lead. Kristen Bell is believable whether she's trading barbs with her boyfriend or crying to her dad. She also has great hair and wicked style -- what more could I possibly ask for in a TV detective?

One of things I always thought was missing from the show though was a close group of friends who could help Veronica solve crimes. Well last night, Veronica finally got her own group of Scoobies - high school friends Wallace and Mac (the always funny Tina Majarino from "Napolean Dyanmite"), plus Mac's bubbly new roommate Parker and Wallace's roommate Piz (aka Zac Efron's long-lost twin). Yes, that's really the character's name, and if I ever get to meet series creator Rob Thomas I promise to ask what he was smoking when he came up with that.
