Letting Go

All right, rather than beat around the bush, I'm just going to come out and say it – last month, I was dumped.

Dumped. It's such a harsh word, but it seems fitting. When you've been in a relationship for a year and a half and your boyfriend suddenly tells you that things aren't the same, and he wants to "take a break," it certainly feels like a weight of sadness and regret has been "dumped" upon your heart.

Over the past month, I've been somewhat in denial about the break-up. This is partially because of the "taking a break" status he and I agreed on. Too bad we didn't clarify exactly what that meant. To me, it meant spending winter break a part in order to give each other space, but knowing that when we returned to school in January, there would be a good chance of us getting back together. I was wrong. To him, it means we're broken up and maybe someday later in life, we'll get back together. Maybe.

And now, it's time for me to move on. I've been in relationships before, but I've never had such a hard time letting go.

For now, my plan is to focus on my New Year's resolutions (I've already had to amend one of them!) and spend time reconnecting with myself. Letting go is definitely going to be tough, but I know I won't get anywhere if I continue to dwell on what could have been.
