drunkorexia

Dark Drink Bottle

My college roommate was smart, pretty, and had tons of friends. She was also super conscious about her weight — she didn’t want to gain even a pound of the freshman 15. But she and her friends were big partiers, and would drink a lot on the weekends. So she started starving herself all day, eating grapes and sugar-free Jello. And then she would go out and drink all her calories, getting really drunk, really fast, and sometimes getting into tricky situations. But because she never lost weight, and wasn't exercising a ton, it didn't seem like any of the eating disorders I always heard about.

Now there’s a catchphrase for this — drunkorexia — and apparently lots of girls and women are going to extremes partying and cutting calories. I’m all for responsible drinking and losing weight safely, but this just made my roommate sick all of the time! I wish I had talked to her about it, because it was definitely dangerous. What do you think? Do you or your classmates feel pressured to binge drink and be skinny? Do you know someone who doesn't eat all day just so that they can save their calories for alcohol? Are your friends talking about this? Let me know!

Crazy love,
Rachel
