Facebook Status Woes

October 2, 2008 at 8:00PM by Laura Dellavilla |

Face to face computers

How many times have you looked at that cute guy sitting in your English class and wondered "Hmm, I wonder if he’s seeing anyone?" I know I’ve done it at least a dozen times. But how do you find out without bluntly blurting out, "Are you seeing someone?" I don't want to ask my best friend to ask his best friend because, let's face it, I'm in college now and things need to be done a little more delicately and a little less desperately. The obvious answer: Facebook.

Thank goodness for Facebook's relationship status option. But do you really take its word? I remember during my freshmen year in college, my friend John and I decided to create a relationship that was "complicated" because we thought it was an amusing status. Let me make this clear now, we were not dating. A few months later, John and I ended our fake complicated relationship because he and his boyfriend began dating. When I changed my status, I received about five messages asking me if I was okay about the break up and what had happened.

That got me thinking, "Oh my God, did people really look at my status and think that I was in a real complicated relationship?" Do people really use that as a means of seeing if I'm single or not? So I looked at a few of my friends' profiles to see what they had as their statuses and half of them weren't real! I never know what to believe when I look at Facebook anymore.

And for the record, I do not have any relationship status up on my Facebook. If a guy wants to know my status, he will have to ask me… or have his best friend ask my best friend.

So tell me, do you put your relationship status as your real status? Do you look to Facebook to inform you on a someone's relationship info?

Much love,

Laura
