Fashion Week 911!

How I made it to and from Fashion Week with a secret sewn into my seams.

I was psyched when I found out I would be going to the Spring 2009 Fashion Week festivities. I was anticipating every aspect: the ruby red shoes on display as a tribute to the 75th Anniversary of the Wizard of Oz, the famed goody bags that accompanied each sitting, and a glimpse of the queen bee of fashion herself, Anna Wintour.

After the RSVPs were in, the invitations organized, and a fashionable outfit constructed for each day of the week, I felt like Cinderella (sans the gown) on her way to the ball. Perhaps I should have anticipated this all along but on Wednesday morning, there was a glitch, a literal snag, in my master plan. Upon inspecting my outfit for the usual flaws (a deodorant stain maybe, or a clingy cat hair), I discovered something worse—FAR worse. A seam in the back of my stylish, high-waisted, black pencil skirt came undone, revealing a hole the length of my hand!

What’s a girl, especially a girl with the hope of discovering that Zac Posen is her Prince Charming, to do? Naturally, I searched for an emergency sewing kit in the “closet” (where all of CosmoGirl’s fashions are kept). Much to my horror, such a kit was not to be found. So, I’ll tell you what I did instead:

FIRST: I slipped a little tape on the inside of skirt, in an attempt to keep it together until I could...

TWO: Sneak off to the ladies room, discreetly tucking a prized office possession into the nook of my arm so that...

THREE: I could whip out said office staple—a stapler!—and work my magic. Inside the stall, I peeled off my skirt and flipped in inside out, examining the damage on my skirt’s seam. (Tip! I brought a friend with me for a 360 degree view. You should too.) I located the little that was left of the stitching and went to work, stapling along the seam in a straight line. I had to go a little beyond the cut in both directions, just to make sure that my makeshift stitching was secure because...

This little princess wannabe was about to ride the D train downtown to Bryant Park, hoping to sneak unnoticed past photographers, fur protestors, and the like. And I did it! I made it to the show, the Rebecca Taylor show to be specific, with all my staples in tact. You could only notice the staple stitches if you were really paying attention, and even then it just looked like silver threading. Best part? I still felt like a queen—if only for the day.

Fashion Week is over, and I no longer get to traipse around NYC looking glamorous on the job. But I do enjoy retelling my mildly horrific and retrospectively hilarious story to my closest friends, who, I admit, thought I was pretty savvy.

So, spill, ladies! Have you ever had a fashion emergency? And what was your Fashion Fix It? Swap your secret tips with everyone!
