Fashion Week - Dennis Basso

I got a little nervous when I approached the tent at Bryant Park and saw a few strategically placed police officers I never noticed before. As I got closer, I saw them – fur protesters for the Dennis Basso Spring/Summer 2009 show - the show I was there to see. I turned away to find another entrance. I did not want to see the photos I knew would be on their posters.

Dennis Basso used real fur for some of his spring jackets, but it was not the highlight of his collection. Instead, the models wore mermaid style dresses, skirts and tops, all put together with the utmost detail.

I was sitting close enough to see the layers of soft fabric Dennis Basso used to create each piece. Everything in the collection was so intricate and beautiful. One light pink jacket had sewn-on brown stripes and the neckline was outlined in a mustard velour fabric. A gold metallic skirt had a bow on the left hip decorated with three small flowers – definitely appropriate for spring.

And you'll never guess what else was on the runway. Tye-dye! A tye-dye top was worn under a cropped jacket. The outfit was pulled together with a piece of twisted tye-dye fabric as a belt and shiny silver pants. So luxurious! There were two tye-dye print dresses. One was a casual puff-sleeved dress with a ruffled bottom. The other was a one-shouldered gown.

Want to get Dennis Basso's designer look? If you have some cash to spend, get something for your wardrobe that screams high fashion by investing in a detailed top or dress. Your friends will want to stay close to you at all times to examine your outfit (and wish they had one just like it). For casual days, add detail by wearing a broach or printed scarf. Or copy Dennis by rolling up a piece of fabric as a belt.

Say no to fur. Say yes to fashion.
