The Republican Party doesn’t have the greatest reputation when it comes to fighting global warming and protecting the environment. A lot of Republican senators and representatives have been pretty vocal in opposing many of the environmental reforms proposed by Democrats, whether out of concern for business or simply because they didn’t think global warming was legitimate. But now, it seems like some important members of the party may be coming around.

Last week, the likely Republican nominee, Senator John McCain, promised to seriously cut greenhouse emissions gases if he is elected President. He also emphasized the importance of finding alternatives to oil.

Senator McCain may be getting all the media attention for his proposals < he is running for President, after all < but he’s not the only Republican supporting environmental reforms. Republican leaders like Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe also strongly support policies that address global warming. Even President Bush, who has opposed global warming reforms in the past, discussed the importance of environmental protection in a speech last month.

I think it’s awesome that the question of global warming seems to be getting less polarizing. Like it or not, our environment has suffered. Instead of debating exactly how and why and when the changes occurred, we need to be proactive in protecting our environment from further changes. The fact that leaders on both sides of the political spectrum are finally dealing with this issue means that we get a cleaner, safer world to live in < and a wider range of options on the ballot in November.

Is fighting global warming an important voting issue for you? Would you vote for someone who didn’t support actively protecting the environment? Why or why not?

Katie
