If you use a computer, READ THIS! The computer has become a huge part of your academic and social life, and chances are it will continue to remain a major part of your life well into your career. That’s why computer ergonomics is so important! Huh? Never heard it? Practicing computer ergonomics means designing your workstation in a way that minimizes discomfort and makes you more productive.

There are lots of ergonomic computer stands, keyboards, chairs, monitors, wrist pads, and mice (ha), which you should definitely look into. You’llfind some at Ergo Works and ErgoPro. There are also a lot of ways you can improve your positioning so you don’t become a big slouchball with strained eyes and tightened muscles.

I found recommendations on the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety & Health Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention web sites.

These are some of the best recommendations I found:

–Make sure you have enough room for stretching your legs under your desk.

–Position your screen so that the top of it is at or just below eye level.

–Take breaks every 20 to 30 minutes.

–Use wrist pads and keep your wrists straight, not bent.

–Position your knees so that they are slightly lower than your hips.

–Sit upright with your back and shoulders both against the backrest.

–Make sure there is a 90- to 115-degree angle between your back and upper legs.

I know I’ve been doing so much wrong and I can totally feel it! How about you? Have you been making any body positioning mistakes? Have you been feeling the effects? If so, where? Start practicing computer ergonomics pronto!

Take care,
