jack johnson is my guru

New Jack Johnson album just came out! I could not be more addicted. I'm a born and bred California girl so driving up the 101 Pacific Coast highway blasting "Taylor" and "Brushfire Fairytales" is just part of the culture.

Days 1-4:

What's my favorite song on the new album?

Enemy. It's got an awesome beat and more importantly (to me anyway) thought-provoking lyrics. One line in particular caught my attention.

"You might think I'm your enemy but that don't make you mine."

See, this is why I love Jack Johnson. He manages to say so much in just one sentence! Anyhow, this got me thinking... There are so many people who I've decided to dislike just because they dislike me. And frankly, I've wasted way too much time and energy on them.

So from now on I'm going to rely on a piece of advice my eleventh grade English teacher gave my class. He told us this: What other people think of you is none of your business.

This seems weird doesn't it? It's so counter-intuitive. But it makes a ton of sense.

Now I'm not suggesting you shouldn't confront someone who is seriously dragging your name through the dirt but if your boyfriend's ex-girlfriend hates you, LET HER. She'll pour all her energy into clawing at you but so long as you don't respond and don't claw back, you take away her power. Others will see her throwing a hissy fit while you remain cool and collected. Not to mention you save yourself a ton of unnecessary grief.
