Oh, the People You'll Meet!

March 2, 2009 at 11:20AM by Divya Bahl |

Leaving Home for College?

When deciding on a college, Boston College was the most appealing because the city appeared to be the intellectual hub of the United States. There are thousands of students and several different colleges and universities.

Flying here from the West Coast I was excited for all the interesting people I’d meet and couldn’t wait to learn from the best. Therefore, when I got here, I took up every opportunity possible.

I went to see Millard Drexler, the CEO of JCrew, Ron Garriques the former president of Motorola, Elie Wiesel the Nobel Laureate, and even President Obama speak at my university. I even got to shake President Obama’s hand!!

I was fortunate to meet and interview Greg Epstein a Humanist Chaplain at Harvard, Kal Penn the actor from the Harold and Kumar movies, and Amber Madison, the author of Hooking Up: A Girl's All-Out Guide to Sex and Sexuality for articles I was writing. Therefore it’s no surprise that I am a big advocate of leaving home when it comes to choosing where to go to college. While it may be uncomfortable to leave your comfort zone, the opportunities are endless when you do!

I’m not saying you won’t meet cool people at a state school – you probably will! Yet going somewhere you’ve never been that has a diverse population of people can also open your eyes.

You learn so much when you meet people who are vastly different from you, with different goals, majors, backgrounds, and interests. I’ve had some of the most stimulating conversations with people I’ve met in school and it’s precisely because of just that!

So high school seniors, don’t be afraid to venture out to somewhere you haven’t been if you can! Who would you love to meet?

Xoxo,
Divya
