Pictures of a semi-nude Miley Cyrus in the June issue of Vanity Fair have stirred up some serious controversy surrounding the young star. Many people think the images (which were shot by famed photographer Annie Leibowitz) are inappropriate for a 15-year-old girl — and one of those people is the 15-year-old girl herself. Well, at least now after receiving a public scolding.

Miley has issued a statement saying “I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed. I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about.” The debate regarding the pictures is still going on after Miley’s apology because Vanity Fair has responded that her parent’s were on set throughout the whole shoot and were able to see all the photos as they were taken on a digital camera. Supposedly, Miley was interviewed about the photo after they were taken and thought it was “perfectly fine.” Her parents thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of their daughter. It seems like provocative portraits of teen stars may becoming a trend in Hollywood. Just last week Gossip Girl (I can’t wait to watch it tonight) was on the cover of New York Magazine and 14-year-old Taylor Momsen sported some white panties, a little tank top, and that’s it. Gossip Girl is definitely a sexy show, but was this shoot pushing it too far? NY Mag and Taylor have definitely not taken the heat that Vanity Fair and Miley have, for obvious reasons. I mean, Miley is pretty much the most popular teen in the world, and partly because of her wholesome values.
