mitt romney drops out

The world of politics can change pretty fast. A week ago, some polls had Senator John McCain and Governor Mitt Romney in a dead heat for the Republican nomination. Today, it looks like Senator McCain may clinch the title--especially because his biggest rival, Governor Romney, just dropped out.

I'll bet some of Governor Romney's supporters are disappointed--and surprised. Up until today, he had promised to keep fighting until the national convention, despite a pretty weak showing on Super Tuesday. At a conference today, though, Governor Romney said that he wanted the Republicans to start getting ready for a battle with the Democrats. He worried that if the Republicans waited too long to (unofficially) name a nominee, the party would have trouble finding momentum come the national election.

But who, exactly, does Governor Romney want the Republicans to start fighting? Democratic Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are still duking it out, with no clear winner in sight. On the Republican side, Governor Huckabee got some support going after Super Tuesday. He's not dropping out yet. The field might have just narrowed, but there's still a lot of uncertainty--and excitement!--surrounding this election.
