eco tips from fall out boy's pete wentz

Fall Out Boy did what they do best today at Giants Stadium--rockin’ the house with their hits “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs” and “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race.” But the purpose of this show was a tad different than usual—they wanted to raise more environmental awareness to their fans.

When they came backstage they weren’t ashamed to say that they’re still working on being more green themselves. “When you think about how much we travel, there’s still going to be a certain amount of tremendous waste of fossil fuels,” they said. But as a group they’re working together to improve their impact on the earth.

And that’s not the only way they’re changing the world. The band is also soon heading to Africa to film their next music video, so of course I was so curious to find out more and asked why they decided to travel so far for their next shoot.

“We got involved with an organization called Invisible Children and we learned about the plight of the child soldier in Uganda,” Pete explained to me. “There are these placement camps that are one square mile and the conditions there are atrocious. We think that--like here--a lot of people take our pictures, but people really won’t take pictures of people at these placements camps, so we figured that if we brought the cameras there, we could do it ourselves.”

Way to use their fame for a good cause! So I then asked what the concept of the video itself was going to be and Pete not only said they’re still working on one, but looked straight into my eyes and said “If you have one, we should meet up afterwards!” Ha! Anytime, Pete!

Afterwards I did catch up with Pete backstage (no, I didn’t go suggesting music video ideas--even though I was thinking maybe something involving CG! readers?!), where I asked what our CG! readers could to do help the earth. And Pete was full of ideas!

“There are very easy small ones,” he explained enthusiastically. “Take shorter showers, unplug your cell phone from the walls when you’re not charging it because it keep taking the charge. Turn off the water when you’re brushing your teeth, keep the air inflated in your tires, drive with people when you can, and when you don’t have to, don’t drive because it’s awesome to go on walks sometimes--and it’s a good way to stay fit too! And there’s more to complain about. When you walk you’re like, oh man, they made us walk all the way over here, Complaining’s fun!”

Gotta love that Pete--and all of Fall Out Boy!
