Ahhh, Summer Love...
I got a lot of questions from you CosmoGirls over the past week (thanks by the way) and I couldnt help but notice a theme. As August approaches and school (or as one of you so glumly put it real life) grows more visible on the horizon, summer romances are flowering and causing stress everywhere. I know I sound like a broken record about this kind of stuff, but Summer Love and the issues it brings is as old the Roman Calendar* and there is an almost universal truth to this kind of romance, not that I have any personal experience with it...
The excitement of summer can be intoxicating, the warm weather, the freedom from school, the long days, sunny skies and the way everybody seems to look better with a tan. This mixture, lets call it The Summer Effect, often results in a hormonal explosion that leads to romances with a short-life span, much like that of a firefly (dont see much of them in the winter either, do we?). While these romances can be exhilarating, almost all them of them are based on the false premise that summer will last forever and you will never have to return to that comparatively dismal real life of school and grey skies. Guys are in the same boat as you on this and I can assure you (not from personal experience of course) that testosterone is not a shield against The Summer Effect. But we also share that creeping feeling in the pit of our stomach that whatever is going on is too good to last. And heres why; because it most likely is.
Despite how great it feels at the time, Summer Love is almost never built to last. Life is not a traveling road production of Grease, and even if it was, Im pretty sure Danny and Sandy wouldnt make it past Christmas break. Remember that guy you had a crush on in June? Hes going to be there in homeroom in September. Its the same way for guys by the way. Autumn has a way of re-setting our lives and bringing us back to reality. Not me though, because I never had a summer heartbreak.
All this being said, my advice to you here is to enjoy yourselves. While summer might only last a few more weeks, youll always have your memories. Dont fret about your future together, (that is real girl talk by the way) live in the present, enjoy the late sunsets and catalogue your memories because thats where Summer Loves tend to end up, as a set of fond memories. So embrace "the now" CosmoGirls and remind yourself that youll always have summer just like Megan McKay and I will always have Camp Hi-Rock.
Oops.
See you next week.
