Paris Fashion Week: Cher Michel Klein Spring/Summer 2009 Collection

Sunday morning, in the aforementioned cheap outfit, I headed to the Opera Ballroom of Le Grand Hôtel Intercontinental for the Cher Michel Klein show. After checking in with the event greeters and getting my seat number, I started to head inside but had to stop to catch my breath. The runway was, as the French say, magnifique! The event organizers had set up pink and blue lighting to highlight the elaborate interior of the ballroom, and the effect was simply incredible.

The show itself was as glitzy as the venue. Designer Michel Klein seemed to incorporate a little bit of everything into the collection: sleek silhouettes, flirty skirts, sophisticated trenches, athletic-inspired hoodies, funky florals, ethnic knits, Grecian ropes… there even seemed to be some Bedazzle action! The models sported sexy tousled hair and crazy fluorescent eye makeup, and they strutted down the runway to a mix of electronic fashiony-sounding songs and energetic pop hits, including my favorite song of the summer, "American Boy" by Kanye West.

The clothes were gorgeous – I wish I could snag a ton of the pieces for my own closet! – but in the end, the whole show seemed a little safe. In fashion, you're supposed to take risks, right? Break boundaries? Start trends? This show was certainly dazzling – even BEDAZZLING at times, hehe – but it didn't really contain that extra something I've come to expect from the collection of a major fashion designer. If anything, I was more inspired by the ballroom – Marie Antoinette-style pumps next spring, anyone?
