The Five Types of Guys

As the old saying goes, "Friends are those rare people who ask how you are and then wait to hear the answer." That couldn’t be more true when it comes to friends, but it's a standard that boyfriends should have to meet, too.

And if you know anything about guys, you know they’re not always good at listening. In my lifetime, I’ve found five different types of guys. Let’s call them The Blank Stare, The Uh Huh, The Excuse Maker, The Memory Lapse and The Keeper.

The Blank Stare acts like he’s listening. He might even try! But his glossed over eyes and occasional twitch tell a different story.

The Uh Huh? Well, he’s the guy that says “uh huh” to everything — until he realizes you asked him a real question that requires a real answer. Then he sheepishly mumbles, "What did you say?"

The Excuse Maker is a man after my own heart, probably because my dad is one of the best. This particular guy will come up with any possible reason to explain why he doesn't remember what you said. My dad blames his bad hearing (not always true!). Other guys will say "I was trying to drive," "The dog was barking," "I was in a hurry," etc. Yeah, you’ve heard them all.

The Memory Lapse is just that — a lapse in memory, whether it’s been weeks, days, or just a few minutes. You'll have a long conversation that you thought was meaningful, but he'll forget about it pretty quickly.

Last we have The Keeper. And that's exactly what he is — a keeper. This is the guy who really does listen, and more importantly, he cares. If you find him (he’s wanted in all 50 states!), hold on tight.
