I'll never forget Election Day 2004. It was the first time I
got to vote for president! Although I was away at college and had to mail in an
absentee ballot, I went to the local polling station to volunteer. They asked me to work not at the real voting booths, but at the kiddy table -- the place parents took their
kids to cast a pretend vote for Bush or Kerry in crayon. Cute,
right? It teaches them from a young age how important voting is.
Whether or not you can actually vote this year, I think it's so important that you encourage everyone you know who can vote to do so on November 4. We need to save our nation from a bigger crisis, and we have two candidates with very different ideas on how to do that. Here's what you can do to make sure every voice is heard:
1. Download, print, and post some funky, stylish Vote! posters. At aiga.org, you'll find more than 200 printable posters that were created for Get Out the Vote, a campaign by AIGA, a professional association for design. The "Bee American and Vote" poster is one of my favorites. Print and hang all over your campus and community!
2. Make a
fashion statement. Wear a Vote t-shirt, like the one American Eagle is selling, or a Vote
accessory, like this cool handmade necklace from Brookadelphia, an online
shop on etsy.com. I spoke to Amber, the 25-year-old designer of this
necklace, and she says that when she wears statement jewelry, it sparks
intelligent conversations about real issues with people.
I might be traveling this Election Day, so I already have my absentee ballot ready to go just in case. If you need an absentee ballot too, go to govoteabsentee.org asap!
I can't wait till Nov. 4...what do you think will happen at the polls?
