African Village

eva amurri, africa, hero, UN, United Nations, namibia, charity, school huts in a field Here is where some of the people in the community lived. This group of homes is closer to the school we were helping build (the school that Tampax and Always sponsored through their Protecting the Futures program). The kids who lived here didn\'t have to walk as far as some of the others.

Dirt Road

African Children

eva amurri, africa, hero, UN, United Nations, namibia, charity, school children in the bed of a truck The kids are used to hitching rides to school. That way, they don\'t have to always walk the long distance. I would get so nervous whenever I saw them in the back of pickup trucks. I wanted everyone to sit down and be safe! But these kids do this all the time. So they\'d sit on the edge and jump around. It was nerve-racking for me, but great fun for them!

African School Children

They love to do acrobatics -- and a lot of them are so talented! It was a treat to watch them move and jump around.

Girl Sticking Tongue Out

eva amurri, africa, hero, UN, United Nations, namibia, charity, school girl sticking her tongue out Most people left their car doors unlocked all the time, and kids would just climb in the cars and play. People would come back and the gears would have been shifted, the lights and radio turned on. The kids thought it was very funny, especially this little girl who was 2 and so sassy and sweet!

Namibian Children Running

Namibian Children

eva amurri, africa, hero, UN, United Nations, namibia, charity, school small children sitting and eating Everybody eats lunch together. It\'s usually about 85 degrees during the day in the summer, very nice. But at night, it gets really cold, and most of the kids don\'t have adequate clothing.

Eva Amurri With African School Children

Eva Amurri With Namibian Boy

eva amurri, africa, hero, UN, United Nations, namibia, charity, school girl holding little boy This little boy was sitting in my lap and wanted his picture taken. So I took a portrait of the two of us. A lot of the kids were really conscious of the camera. Every time they saw you pulling it out, they\'d want their pictures taken. Some of them would stand there with these very serious faces and look at the camera until it flashed, then they\'d say, \"Lemme see! Lemme see!\" A lot of them don\'t have mirrors and so they don\'t get to see their own faces often. It was touching to watch them look at themselves.

Eva Amurri in Africa

I feel so grateful and happy to have experienced this place and met these wonderful people and given something back to a community that needed a helping hand. I can\'t wait to come back and do more!
