Gregory Smith Riding A Camel

This of course isn\'t my usual morning routine. It was in the middle of the Sahara Desert. We went camping out there, and when we woke up in the morning we would ride out on camels. It\'s cool because in the middle of the scorching hot desert they only need water once every three days or so. They drink, like, 50 liters or something. It all goes in the hump and then you ride the hump.

We were in the same sort of area where they shot
Lawrence of Arabia. We had a tour guide, because if you get lost out there I don\'t think you\'d survive a day. It\'s too hot.

Camels are kind of crazy because their front legs and their rear legs both bend in opposite directions, but they can still run like, 25 or 30 miles per hour.

Camels don\'t actually spit. That was one of the first things I asked and I was definitely corrected. They don\'t spit at all. At least that\'s what we were told—and I didn\'t see any camel-spitting going on while I was there.

This was taken while I was riding on the roof of a car en route to pick up our camels—the transportation method of choice. Of our three modes of transportation: camels, donkeys, and a Romanian car called a Dacia, the Dacia was probably the least reliable!

My girlfriend likes this picture. The headscarf is a bit much, but I had to wear it for protection from the sun.
Gregory Smith on a Sand Dune

One day a group of us hiked up to the top of this huge,
huge dune. It took us an hour to get from the base of it to the top, and it was really steep. I thought it\'d be hilarious to slide all the way down it back to my camp. And I was pretty successful!

Sometimes I would slow down and I\'d have to paddle, but it was almost like being on water because the sand was moving so fast.

The sand was so fine. It wasn\'t the grainy, coarse sand like you get on a beach here. It was like baby powder. But I had Moroccan baby powder sand in every part of my body after that!
