Make these yummy City of Ashes cupcakes!
Baker's Dozen

Equipment:
Cupcake pans
Paper liners
White frosting
Food coloring
Decorations: sprinkles, decorative frosting tubes, candied or edible flowers, etc. — see what you can find at your grocery store!

Ingredients:
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/3 cups sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cups shortening
1 cups milk
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cupcake pans with paper liners.

2. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium mixing bowl. In a large bowl, combine shortening, milk, eggs, and vanilla until well combined, about 1 minute on medium speed. Scrape sides of bowl with a rubber spatula.

3. Add the flour mixture to the shortening mixture in three additions, scraping the bowl between every addition. Beat on high speed for about a minute, or until well mixed.

4. If you’d like, separate the cupcake batter into multiple batches and add a little bit of food coloring to each so you have an array of cupcakes in different colors!

5. Spoon cupcake batter into paper liners, filling each about 1/2 to 2/3 full.

6. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

7. Cool 5 minutes in pans, then remove from pan and place on wire racks to cool completely.

8. Once cupcakes are completely cooled, it’s time to decorate! As you did with the batter, separate the white frosting into different batches and use the food coloring to come up with fun color combinations of your own. Then decorate your creations with themes from City of Ashes. Maybe add edible or candied flowers if you’re going for a faerie vibe, or stick with red food coloring if vampires are more your style. Don’t forget to be creative!
