Circa Survive's front man gives CosmoGirl the inside scoop on his solo debut — but don't worry, he's not leaving the band.

HOW DO YOU SEPARATE YOUR SOLO CAREER FROM YOUR BAND'S CAREER?

I've been learning over the last couple of years as we've been touring that you really have to live your art all the time. I never stop thinking about songs or poems, or stop wanting to read or paint. It's so cool that I can incorporate all of that into what I do for a living. I don't try to give direction to things. In the initial stages, I just let things become what they are and gravitate to wherever they go. If it doesn't work for Circa Survive, it might work for the solo project. Time management has always been difficult for me, but I'm lucky that my band is so supportive of what I'm doing. Everything cycles into a really awesome little spiral.

WHAT'S IT LIKE PUTTING YOUR OWN NAME OUT THERE AS AN ARTIST NOW?

It's definitely something I've had to embrace. It's one thing to have your band name, and it's another thing to have your own name. I had issues with it when the band first started and people would yell, "Anthony Green!" I was like, "That's so weird." I had tremendous issues dealing with that, and a lot of that went onto the last Circa Survive record. I think this solo album is my acceptance of the fact that I love playing music and doing it for a living, that it's who I am. These songs are who I am. It's a pretty cool feeling, being able to let my guard down and accept that people might not like it. It's just about having fun, being confident, and loving what you do.
