Five Questions with Jesse McCartney

Sure his perfect smile and green eyes get you every time, but this 22-year-old is a lot more than an adorable baby-face. He sings, he writes his own songs, he acts and he always leaves us wanting more — and that’s exactly what he’s giving us with his album, Departure: Recharged, available April 7th. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO DO A RE-RELEASE OF DEPARTURE?

I was in the studio about a month ago writing a few new songs. Also some of the songs I had already written with other people were sounding really good, but weren’t on the first record, like the remix [“How Do You Sleep?”] with Ludacris. So I played them all for the label and we came up with the idea to do a big re-release that would be a deluxe version of Departure with four new songs and some bonus material. It’s for anyone who hasn’t heard or didn’t buy the record last year — it gives them some new material to check out and for some new fans a chance to have the album in its entirety for the first time.

SO YOU JUST GOT BACK FROM YOUR U.S TOUR. WERE THERE ANY MISHAPS ALONG THE WAY?

Actually two nights ago I dropped my mic — I usually flip it in my hand but I completely over-rotated it during a little bit of a dance break and it went flying across the stage. It’s okay because I wasn’t singing, you know? But it was still pretty embarrassing, people definitely noticed.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR STINT ON GREEK AIRING MONDAY MARCH 30 ON ABC FAMILY?

It was great; I played this character named Andy who is a young high school football recruit and he’s about to experience his first year at college in the fraternity house. It’s everything and anything you could imagine — the debauchery of it all. I don’t think I would last very long in his situation.

WHO DO YOU LISTEN TO AND WHO YOU WOULD YOU LOVE TO WORK WITH?

I’m also a huge Adele fan. I love Ne-yo’s Year of the Gentleman record, I think he did a great job. I would like to work with a female artist – like Katie Perry or Lady Gaga. But I don’t listen to a whole lot of new music — I love James Taylor, Carol King, and James Brown. My influences growing up were more soulful R&B, like Michael and Ray Charles. My friends were listening to Metallica and I was listening to Boyz II Men.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT MAKING MUSIC OR ACTING, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?

I am really into art. There are a lot of cool galleries here in L.A. I also have a lot of art in my house. I actually have a really bad ass graffiti mural painted on the walls. I had seen some of this graffiti artist’s work and I loved his style, so I hired him to come paint my house. I love food too. So I am constantly watching the Food Network trying to learn how to cook the next new dish.
