Five Questions with Parachute

Being in a band together since the 10th grade, the boys of Parachute (you may recognize their hit song “She is Love” from this Nivea Body’s Smooth Sensations commercial) know one another pretty well. But it wasn't until the five of them hit the road in a van to tour the U.S., that they really got to know each others' weirder habits. I sat down with Will Anderson (guitars, piano, lead vocals) and Nate McFarland (lead guitar, vocals) and got to hear their silly tour stories and a whole bunch on what is really on their minds: girls. They even treated me to a live acoustic performance (we got it on video for you!) of their songs "She is Love" and "She." MOST OF YOUR SONGS ARE ABOUT GIRLS. WOULD YOU SAY THAT’S TRUE?

\r\n\r\nWILL: Yeah, it’s the thing I have the most experience with in terms of life. A good number of them have on this CD [Losing Sleep out May 19t] are about girls, and a good number of them are just related to the idea of relationships — the good and the bad. Nate has a girlfriend, a very steady long-term one, but for me I was always in and out of relationships.

WHAT DOES A GIRL HAVE TO DO TO GET A SONG WRITTEN ABOUT HER?

\r\n\r\nWILL: You would have to break a heart or two. But a lot of the songs aren’t about a specific girl. For those that are, they just had an interesting story. So they brought up ideas in my head, and I was like, \'ding, oh there’s a song.\' So it isn’t anything specific they did, it just happened that they were the muse or the catalyst to make a song to happen.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL GIRL?

\r\n\r\nNATE: I would just describe my girlfriend.
\r\n\r\nWILL: Yeah. Nate’s girlfriend is awesome, we all love her. But for me, I think chill, easy to talk to, intelligent. I don’t really like to go out and be crazy. Literally, when I am at home with my family and friends, I play a lot of Boggle. So, if you’re chill and cool with just hangin\' out, that will do it all for me.

Losing Sleep Walking

WHAT NEW THINGS HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT EACH OTHER ON TOUR?

\r\n\r\nNATE: More than we should ever know. Sleeping habits, digestive habits…
\r\n\r\nWILL: I didn’t know this but I make really weird noises in my sleep. Apparently I have like sleep apnea.
\r\n\r\nNATE: One time I was riding shotgun with a laptop that was connected to the speakers so we could jam, and it was on my lap and I was holding a Red Bull (because I love Red Bull) and I started to dose off and the laptop started to slide off my lap so I woke up and I flung Red Bull all over the driver and everything is still sticky, it’s disgusting.
\r\n\r\nWILL: Nate is definitely a crazy sleeper.
\r\n\r\nNATE: I’m the crazy one?!

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST SHOW LIKE?

\r\n\r\nWILL: We played at this dingy bar in our home town [Charlottesville, Virginia] where’s there’s a heckler there. He is there every night, it’s not a real show unless he is there heckling you.
\r\n\r\nNATE: He heckled us...
\r\n\r\nWILL: Anytime you say anything he will just like rip on you for it. So you’ll be like, \'We’re happy to be here!\' And he will be like \'Get out! No one is happy to see you!\' But after the show, he took me aside and sat me down and told me that we were getting really good. It was the best moment of my life.
