YOU STARTED PERFORMING AT A REALLY YOUNG AGE. DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU WERE SHOVED INTO THE SPOTLIGHT?
Luckily, my parents were not "momagers" at all. They were and still are extremely supportive, but from a far distance. When I was 10, my friends and I saw that there was this festival where anyone could play in the street, so we just called ourselves "10, 11, 12" because those were our ages went out, played, and made 130 bucks in one afternoon, which is a ton of money when you're that age! That's when I made the decision to perform for the rest of my life.
YOU'VE PLAYED WITH SOME AMAZING ARTISTS. ANY FAVORITES?
I got to play with James Brown before he died, which was pretty unbelievable! The tours with John Mayer and Maroon 5 were crazy because I was still really young and skinny and new to the scene. With those shows, you're playing for screaming, rabid fans, and they don't let you get away with anything, so it was definitely a learning experience. Jason Mraz, who I also toured with, is a very cool guy and probably one of my favorite people just to hang out with.
