The Rooney lead singer answers five questions about their new album, Calling the World — and more!

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM BACK IN 2003 AND THIS NEW ONE?

This one’s closer to home. It’s melodically more sophisticated, and we were a little more dangerous, trying new things musically and really trying to take it as far as we can. Plus, everyone matured as players and musicians — and I think my voice finally went through puberty fully!

WHICH SONG MEANS THE MOST TO YOU?

Track 12 ["Help Me Find My Way"] is the most personal song I’ve ever written. It’s about my father, who passed away in 1994. I was young when it happened, and I never wrote about it. There are certain topics songwriters stay away from because it’s hard to go there. I didn’t sit down and go, "I want to write something about my dad now." It just came together one night. It is a heavy song, even the way it’s produced. It’s just vocals and strings, so it’s very intimate.
