Vanessa Carlton, Grammy- nominated singer-songwriter, is urging pet owners to remember their ABCs: Animal Birth Control.
Did you know that roughly 4 million dogs and cats are put to sleep each year in animal shelters because there simply arent enough good homes for them? And buying a pet from a breeder or a pet store only adds to the problem: it eliminates a shelter animals chance of being adopted.
It's a common misconception that dogs from breeders are easier to train or that they have fewer health problems; in fact, many of these animals have even greater health problems due to the poor conditions in puppy mills. "The most well-adjusted and emotionally balanced dogs and cats are the mixed breeds found in shelters," says Carlton. "Even if you're taking in an abused pet, the reward in rehabilitating the animal can be profound."
By adopting from a shelter, you're saving a life. "Bottom line: Always go to a shelter first. Personally, I think spaying and neutering should be an enforced law," she says.
Tell us, what do you think? Would you adopt a pet from a shelter?
