Prom night is about so many different things — like hanging out with your friends, taking tons of pictures, and dancing with your date — but shopping for that perfect prom dress is all about you! To get the personalized service that will make the whole process special, visit your local boutiques with this checklist as your cheat sheet. Your shopping experience is sure to be a success! Now go ahead, get shopping!

DO
... make an appointment. Call the store to schedule a time to meet with a dress consultant. It’s free, and you’ll feel like a celebrity with her own personal stylist!
... be open-minded. The consultant may suggest a gown you wouldn’t have picked, but try it on anyway. You never know — it may turn out to be a sweet surprise!
... know your budget. Speak up about what you’re willing to spend — you don’t want to fall in love with a dress you can’t afford.
... test it out. Dance around and make sure you’re comfortable moving in the dress. Be sure to look in a three-way mirror to see yourself from all angles.

DON'T
... stress over size. Don’t pay attention to the number on the label. Better to have a dress in a bigger size that flows over your body than a smaller one that’s too tight!
... shop with an entourage. Go with one or two close friends, or with your mom. They’ll keep the attention on you, and you know they’ll be totally honest.
... forget the extras. Bring shoes with the heel height you plan to wear that night. They’ll help you see the whole look.
... fake the fit. If a dress doesn’t fit perfectly, get it tailored. Shortening the straps or adding padding to the bust can be the difference between ho-hum and H-O-T hot!

Dressing Room 101
— Leave the fitting room tidy after you’re through (you wouldn’t want to step into a trashed room, would you?).
— Carefully hand each dress back to the consultant who is helping you.
— Don’t wear makeup that will rub off on the dresses, or jewelry that might snag them.
