Excuses, Excuses
At last! The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about the reasons behind those big ol' whoppers.

You know that urge you get to strangle your boyfriend after he's fed you some lame excuse for why he didn't call? Well, there's something you should know: While being lied to definitely doesn't feel good, it doesn't necessarily mean your guy is trying to cover up something horrible. See, unlike girls, when guys lie, we're not really thinking about the benefits or consequences to what we're saying. It just happens in the moment — we haven't sat and thought about the lie for hours. And often, the reason we're not doing as we're saying (or saying as we're doing) is fairly innocent. So before you inflict bodily harm on your guy, check out the most common reasons that guys lie. Then maybe (just maybe!) you'll forgive him?

BECAUSE WE DON'T LIKE BEING WRONG
If there's one thing every girl should know about guys, it's that we're wrong — a lot. But we'd much rather insist that our shortcut to your house is 15 minutes faster (even after you clock us in 15 minutes late) than admit that we're off base. We have egos, and we'll stop at nothing to keep them intact!

BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT YOU TO YELL
Believe it or not, we generally don't like arguing with people we care about (e.g., you). It's much easier for us to say we fell asleep early than to admit we were at a friend's house playing Halo all night. We're hardwired to avoid conflict — it's our way of keeping things hassle-free. And since girls are pros at verbal arguments, we know that getting into a heated debate with you will be a long, uphill battle — one that we'll never win. So we'd rather not even go there.

BECAUSE WE'RE AVOIDING HUMILIATION
When it comes down to it, we're pretty fragile creatures. So if we feel like an idiot for some reason, we start making up stories. It's a defense mechanism we use when we're feeling hurt and/or embarrassed. Why did your guy say he was flirting with some girl at a party (when he actually didn't talk to a single girl all night)? Because he saw you chatting up some guy earlier in the evening — and got jealous. A little make-believe flirtation simply makes him feel less like a loser.
