"Contra dancing is something you probably won't see anywhere but Middlebury. To tell the truth, it's like square dancing, I don't know the difference. Each "Middkid" has at least two major exposures to it, during new-student orientation and during senior week. Everyone decks out in overalls and bandannas, cowboy hats and boots, braids, fake freckles, and whatever else is lying around. Then it's off to a tent on Battell Beach, a big open quad, to learn to promenade correctly to the tunes of a live band. It's a hoot and a holler, if you'll excuse the vernacular, and most everyone gets into it!"

"We are a group that, by and large, likes to get pleasantly lost in the 80's from time to time. I think we're a little unusual for a college campus in that dance parties are extremely popular. The best you can get is a good 80's party with a live cover band and everyone dressed in day-glo and legwarmers."

"Guster came and performed in our hockey arena last spring, and they discovered for themselves a fine Midd tradition, one that's related to our 80's parties. Madonna's "Like a Prayer" has the immediate effect of causing every Middkid or alum present to remove his or her shirt. The guys from Guster got an email from someone, and they couldn't believe it, so they started playing the song . . . and broke down laughing in the middle because everyone was topless within seconds. Maybe this tradition sounds risque or inappropriate, but it's very liberating!
