Lifting Weights

I’m not exactly sure when the misconception about women and weights began, but let's set it straight right now: lifting weights heavier than 10 pounds will not give you big bulky muscles.

I love fitness and frequently I see girls doing simple overhead presses with very light weights, doing high amounts of reps and then wondering why they aren’t slimming down. The truth is, they could probably lift more weight. But won’t heavier weights and less reps give you big man muscles? Not exactly. In fact, you might find that by increasing the weight a little and decreasing the amount of reps, you'll actually slim down and tone your muscles. I'm not advocating you go for the 50lb barbell, but I regularly lift 20-25 lbs. overhead with one hand, and I promise my arms don’t look manly. Using free weights, instead of the machines, also helps because it means you have to keep your whole body tight while lifting. So I’m constantly working my abs, glutes and legs too, even if I’m lifting with my arms.

In addition to adding a little extra weight, mix up your work-out so you don’t get bored! Make some work-out days more rigorous than others—and take some days off entirely! Spring Break is fast approaching and I’ll admit (even though I’m heading north) I’m still trying to get my body into beach-ready condition.

Do you have any work-out stories or tips to share? Or, what are you girls doing for Spring Break? Can’t wait to hear from you!

xoxo
