Five Questions with Soyon An
It's safe to say that Soyon An has made her mark in the styling world. With an Emmy already on her shelf for her work on So You Think You Can Dance Season 4, along with adding American Idol to her resume, An is a fashion force to reckon with. Below, she tells us how she got her start in styling and who she hopes to collaborate with one day.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO GO THE FASHION ROUTE AS A CAREER CHOICE?

"I think it just happened naturally, the decision came with the opportunity and that is what I wanted to do. It was never I wanted to be in design. When I was a senior in high school I applied to a bunch of design schools and started taking fashion courses. From there I went to FIDM to get on a little bit of a faster route (I'm a slight overachiever) and that got me into the world of celebrity styling."

YOU'VE DESIGNED FOR AMERICAN IDOL AND SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE FOR MULTIPLE SEASONS. WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF COLLABORATING WITH CHOREOGRAPHERS AND SINGERS LIKE?

"With the So You Think You Can Dance choreographers, they get their music cleared every week and then depending on the song choice they then choose a concept they want to go with. I listen to the music and figure out a few colors and how I want the clothes to flow with the song. If it's a soft song, I opt for clothes that have more flow. The faster the song is, the tighter the clothes will get. The choreographers also send me pictures of what they are referencing so we are all on the same page as far as concept. I try to use a lot of color and I stay away from black if possible. When I do use black, I use lots of Swarovski crystals to make it pop."

"As for American Idol I collaborated directly with the singers. I get a sense of their personality and meet them at the Top 35 so I get a basic sense of who they are. I try to revamp and add to their existing style at the same time. Together we polish their look and sometimes, like in the case of Lil Rounds we discover a hidden diva! She came in a mother and discovered her curves and realized she was really a diva at heart."
