■ Eat locally and healthfully. Farm to School connects school cafeterias to local farms. Instead of shipping frozen foods across the nation in huge trucks, which uses tons of fuel, you can eat fresh produce and meat from around the corner. More than 700 school districts across the nation participate. Contact Farm to School for more info.

■ Paint your town green. By signing the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, almost 700 of the countrys mayors have pledged to lower CO2 emissions within five years to amounts that are 7 percent below 1990 levels in their cities. Visit usmayors.org to see if your mayor is on board. If she or he isnt, eco-activist Laurie David has a letter at Scholastic that you can send to Ms. or Mr. Mayor!
