something about jane

Becoming Jane

I recently read an article comparing Jane Austen's books to Sex and the City (the HBO TV show). And I thought, "Wait a second... the same Jane Austen I had to read in English class in high school?" I always HATED Jane Austen's books. I really like most of the classics we read in English class, but Jane Auten's books were always my least favorite... it just seemed like some corny old-English lady blathering on about high society and social class in language I couldn't even understand.

So, after reading this article comparing Jane Austen to Carrie and Co., and hearing about the new film, Becoming Jane, starring Anne Hathaway, I thought I should give Miss Jane a second look. So after more than a dozen fun summer novels, I am once again reading a Jane Austen classic, Emma.

So far, the main character seems like a twittering, egotistical girl, and half the time I have no idea what she is saying... but... somehow I am starting to understand the juicy gossipy parts.

So my question is, have any of you guys read Jane Austen's books in school (or for fun)? If so, what do you think? And, do you think it's worth it to revisit other classic books for a second time to see what I missed?
