The summer heat wave has hit full force, leaving you high and dry if you have no relief. These soaring temps and scorching rays may have others begging for the air-conditioned living room, but you want more out of your summer than vegging out with America's Next Top Model marathons.
Your fun-filled summer may be slowly wilting before your eyes, but don't worry CosmoGirl is here to help. Weve got you covered with three cheap, easy ways to keep your cool:
1) Be a Backyard Beach Babe
No pool? No problem. Invite your friends over for a waterworks afternoon. Relive your childhood and hook up the sprinkler in the front yard, or throw a pool party by filling a few baby pools with cold water for a quick dip. You could even buy a cheap Slip'n Slide from a toy store and have sliding contests with your friends.
You'll be out in the sun, so be sure to slather up with SPF. If you feel lightheaded or nauseous and your skin is cool and flushed, it could be something more than sunburn: heat exhaustion. This condition occurs often in high temperatures, so watch for these symptoms, keep your body cool, and drink a lot of fluids.
2) Be a Bookworm
Where else but a bookstore can you get all the AC, comfy chairs, iced coffee, and Twilight you can take? Your local bookshop is the perfect daytime summer hot spot. Browse the fiction section for the newest Gossip Girl book, or flip through the fashion mags on the news rack.
The major plus about bookstores? It's okay to read the merchandise. So grab your tall, skim iced chai tea and the latest issue of CosmoGirl, and snuggle up for a cool day off your feet.
3) Be a Local
If you'd rather spend the day out on the town, try hitting up local entertainment spots for nighttime delights at daytime prices. Movie theaters are a great way to beat hazy summer days. The matinee prices are hard to beat because they let you catch the latest flicks with cash left for popcorn.
If you're into art, call around to your city's museums to see if they have special student tickets or daytime prices. Release your inner artist by admiring the works of others or create your own at a class at a recreation center or community college.
